How Long Does Cooked Chicken Last in the Fridge? (Less Time Than Aaron Thinks)

In short

Two days in the UK - the Food Standards Agency says eat leftovers within 48 hours or freeze them. Cool it fast, reheat it once until steaming hot, and use it up in a pie, curry or sandwich before day three.

Cooked chicken lasts 2 days in the fridge in the UK. The Food Standards Agency says to eat leftovers within 48 hours, or freeze them. That's the honest answer to how long does cooked chicken last in the fridge, and it's shorter than most people think.

Aaron thinks it's a week. Aaron double-checks the locks, the oven, the iron and his own birth certificate. He does not check the fridge.

His system is the sniff test. One sniff, eyes closed, a nod. Like a bloodhound, if bloodhounds got food poisoning.

So here's the proper version: how long it keeps, how to store it, when to freeze it, how to reheat it without regret, and what to make with it before the clock runs out.

We tested all of this in the Oliver's Kitchen fridge. The fridge has seen things. The fridge has opinions.

Why the UK says 2 days and America says 4

UK advice is 2 days because the Food Standards Agency plays it safe; the US says 3 to 4 days, and Ireland says 3.

The Food Standards Agency's chilling and freezing advice is short and to the point: eat leftovers within 48 hours, or freeze them if you won't.

The USDA, and big American health sites like Healthline, say 3 to 4 days. Ireland's food safety body, safefood, says three.

If a UK website tells you the FSA says three to four days, it doesn't. That's the American number wearing a Union Jack hat.

The difference isn't that British chicken goes off faster. It's not homesick. It's that the UK picks a cautious number most fridges can actually manage, including the one with the door that doesn't quite shut.

We're in the UK, so this post follows the FSA. Two days. Aaron has appealed. The appeal was heard by Eesha. It lasted four seconds.

How to store cooked chicken in the fridge

Storing cooked chicken in shallow lidded tubs, pizza slice Isaac labelling one, Doberman Tyson running off with a drumstick
Isaac labels every tub. Tyson doesn't need a label. Tyson needs a lock.

Cool it, take it off the bone, put it in shallow covered tubs and get it in a 0 to 5C fridge within one to two hours of cooking.

  1. Cool it fast. The FSA says cool cooked food at room temperature and get it in the fridge within one to two hours. Not on the hob until bedtime.
  2. Strip the carcass while it's warm. It's easier, and flat pieces cool quicker than a whole bird. Proper kitchen scissors get through the joints faster than a knife and a lot of swearing.
  3. Shallow, covered tubs. A thin layer chills right through. A deep bowl stays warm in the middle for hours.
  4. Write the date on it. Isaac does this every time. Nobody taught him. He just knows things.

How long can you keep cooked chicken in the fridge? It depends where it came from

Home-cooked chicken, roast or in a sauce, gets 2 days; shop-bought cooked chicken follows the use-by date and the "once opened" line on the pack.

  • Your own roast chicken: 2 days in the fridge, counted from when you cooked it, not from when you finally put it away
  • Chicken curry, stew or pasta sauce: also 2 days. The sauce doesn't preserve it. Sauce is a disguise, not a force field.
  • Shop-bought cooked chicken: go by the use-by date, and once it's open, the "eat within" line on the label - usually a couple of days
  • Takeaway chicken: treat it like your own cooking. Fridge it within two hours of it arriving, eat it within 2 days
  • Defrosted cooked chicken: eat it within 24 hours of it fully defrosting, the FSA says. The 2-day clock doesn't start again

The use-by date is about safety; the best-before date is about quality. Cooked chicken has a use-by for a reason. Best-before is a suggestion. Use-by is a threat.

Eesha has written "2 DAYS" on a sticky note on the fridge door. In red. Underlined twice. Aaron is pretending he can't read red.

Want it on the fridge? Here's the whole 2-day rule as one picture you can save, print or stick up.

How to tell if cooked chicken has gone off

Cooked chicken gone off and grey in a tub, toast Erin holding her nose by the bin, black dog Dexter hoping
Erin has decreed the chicken banished. Dexter has lodged a formal objection.

Bin cooked chicken that smells sour, feels slimy or sticky, or has gone grey, green or mouldy - but don't rely on looks, because chicken that's unsafe can look and smell fine.

  • Smell: sour, eggy or a bit like ammonia
  • Feel: slimy or tacky on the outside
  • Look: dull and grey, a green tinge, or any mould
  • Date: over 2 days, it goes - even if it smells lovely

Never taste it to check. The bacteria that make you ill don't announce themselves. Aaron's sniff test has a perfect record. The record is zero for three.

Can you freeze cooked chicken?

Yes - freeze cooked chicken as soon as it's cooled, within the 2-day fridge window, and it's best eaten within 2 to 3 months.

The FSA says leftovers should be frozen as soon as possible, so don't wait until day two to decide. Indecision is not a preservation method.

  1. Cool it first, then freeze. Warm food in the freezer warms up everything round it.
  2. Freeze it in portions - one bag per meal. You can't defrost a third of a brick.
  3. Squeeze the air out of freezer bags and lie them flat. They freeze faster and stack like books.
  4. Label it with what it is and the date. Every freezer has a mystery bag. Ours is from 2019. We're scared of it.

Frozen, it stays safe. The 2 to 3 months is about taste and texture - after that it starts to get dry and tired. Like all of us in February.

Defrost it in the fridge, never on the worktop, and eat it within 24 hours of it fully defrosting. In a hurry, the microwave defrost setting works if you're cooking it straight away.

Can you reheat chicken?

Can you reheat chicken - garlic Eesha stirring steaming chicken curry in the microwave, onion Ayden waiting with a plate
Eesha gave the microwave three minutes. Then she gave it a detention for being cold in the middle.

Yes - reheat cooked chicken once, until it's steaming hot all the way through, stirring halfway.

The FSA's line is that food should be cooked to steaming hot throughout, not just warmed. If you've got a thermometer, 75C in the thickest part is the number to hit. Their guide to cooking and reheating gives 75C for 30 seconds as one of the safe combinations.

  • Microwave: cover it, add a splash of water or stock, stir halfway. Microwaves heat in pockets - hot at the edges, Arctic in the middle
  • Hob: best for curries and sauces. Stir often until it's bubbling all the way through
  • Oven: best for roast pieces. Covered with foil, with a splash of stock, at 180C until piping hot

A probe thermometer ends the guessing in five seconds. Our guide to using a meat thermometer shows where to put it. Middle of the dish. Not the bowl. Ayden.

You don't have to reheat it at all. Cooked chicken that was cooled and fridged within two hours is fine cold, the FSA says. Cold chicken sandwich at midnight: the FSA's most relatable ruling.

Can you reheat chicken twice?

No - the FSA says you should only ever reheat leftovers once, so only heat up what you're going to eat.

Each time food cools and warms again, it spends more time at the temperatures bacteria love. Some of them leave toxins behind that a second reheat won't fix. Ireland's safefood advice says the same: never reheat more than once.

So take out one portion, heat that, put the rest back in the fridge cold. The chicken doesn't get a second date. It had its moment. It peaked in the oven.

This is also why the freezer bag trick works: freeze in single portions, and you never have to reheat more than you'll eat.

Leftover chicken recipes

Leftover chicken recipes on the table - pie, curry, soup and sandwiches, jalapeño Lara pulling the sandwiches away from onion Ayden
Ayden reached for a sandwich. Lara moved the plate. Ayden reached again. This went on until the sandwiches were Lara's.

The best leftover chicken recipes are quick ones you cook within the 2 days: sandwiches, pies, curries, soups, fried rice and pasta bakes.

Most of the leftover roast chicken recipes worth making take under 30 minutes, because the chicken's already cooked. The chicken did the hard bit. You just have to not lose it.

  • The sandwich: cold chicken, salad and a proper garlic mayo. The best lunch of the week, and it needs no reheating at all
  • Chicken pie: chicken, leeks and mushrooms in a white sauce, under a pastry lid. Bake until the filling is bubbling
  • Curry: make the sauce first, add the chicken at the end and simmer until it's steaming hot all the way through
  • Noodle soup: stock, noodles, spring onions, a bit of ginger, chicken in last. Twenty minutes, and it fixes most colds
  • Fried rice: use cold rice from the fridge, not warm, and get the chicken piping hot in the pan
  • Pasta bake: chicken, tomato sauce, pasta, cheese on top. Into the oven until it's bubbling at the edges
  • Quesadillas or wraps: chicken, cheese and whatever's lurking in the salad drawer, toasted in a dry pan
  • Chicken salad: cold chicken, leaves, something crunchy and a sharp dressing. Eaten the next day, it's practically virtuous

Every one of these counts as your one reheat, so cook it and eat it, don't cook it and keep it. Out of chicken to leave over? Our flattened roast chicken that's done in half the time or the one with forty cloves and no vampires will sort that.

Don't bin the carcass - make stock

Simmer the chicken carcass with water, an onion, a carrot and a bay leaf for about an hour, then strain it - and treat the stock like the chicken: 2 days in the fridge or straight into the freezer.

Break the carcass up so it fits the pan, just cover it with cold water, and keep it at a lazy simmer, not a boil. Boiling makes it cloudy. Cloudy stock tastes fine. It just looks like it's had a rough night.

Cool it quickly by splitting it into smaller tubs. Freeze it in portions and you've got the start of the noodle soup above. Isaac freezes it in an ice cube tray. Then he labels the ice cube tray. He's already better at this than me.

The one ruleDay 1 you eat it, day 2 you eat it or freeze it, day 3 it's gone. Write the date on the tub and you'll never have to sniff anything again.

If it goes wrong

Roast chicken left out on the worktop overnight, pizza slice Isaac pointing at the clock, Doberman Tyson looking guilty
Isaac spotted the problem straight away. Tyson spotted it at about 2am, and has been looking guilty ever since.

Left it out overnight? Cooked chicken that's been at room temperature for more than two hours isn't safe to keep.

Fix: Bin it. Reheating won't save it. Some mistakes are lessons. This one's a bin day.

No idea when you cooked it? If you can't remember, you can't count to 2.

Fix: When in doubt, throw it out - then date every tub from now on. A pen costs less than a lost weekend.

Cold in the middle after the microwave? Microwaves heat in pockets.

Fix: Stir, spread it out flatter, give it longer, and check the middle is steaming. Lukewarm is not a temperature. It's a cry for help.

Dry and stringy when reheated? Lean chicken loses moisture fast.

Fix: Add a splash of stock or water and cover it, or reheat it in a sauce. Chicken breast needs a moisturiser. Don't we all.

Big pot of curry won't cool down? A deep pan stays warm in the middle for hours.

Fix: Split it into shallow tubs so it's in the fridge within one to two hours. Divide and cool-quer.

Defrosted too much? Defrosted cooked chicken has 24 hours, not two days.

Fix: Eat it within the 24 hours and freeze smaller portions next time. One bag, one meal. Not one bag, one regret.

Cooked chicken questions people actually ask

Can you eat chicken 5 days after it was cooked? Not by UK advice. The FSA says 48 hours. Five days is US-plus-a-day, and that's still too long. Five days is a long weekend, not a shelf life.

Can I reheat cooked chicken after 4 days? No. Reheating doesn't reset the clock - it was past its 2 days before it went in the microwave.

Is 7 days too long for cooked chicken in the fridge? Yes. Well past every country's advice. Bin it, and don't let anyone sniff it first.

Can you eat cooked chicken cold? Yes, if it was cooled and in the fridge within two hours of cooking, the FSA says. Eat it within the same 2 days.

How long does cooked chicken last in the freezer? It stays safe frozen, but it's best eaten within 2 to 3 months - after that it gets dry and freezer-burnt.

Can you refreeze meat? Raw meat that's been defrosted can be cooked and then frozen as a new dish - that's the FSA and safefood line. After that, you can only reheat it once. Defrosted cooked chicken should be eaten within 24 hours, not put back in the freezer.

Can you freeze chicken that was frozen raw and then cooked? Yes. Cook it properly, cool it, freeze it. Then it's a one-reheat meal.

Does cooked chicken last longer in foil or a tub? A sealed tub is better - it keeps air and fridge smells out. Foil works too, as long as it's wrapped tightly with no gaps. Aaron wraps his packed lunch like a Christmas present. Every day. In June.

Should cooked chicken go on the top or bottom shelf? Above any raw meat, so nothing drips on it. Raw meat lives on the bottom shelf, sealed.

That's it. Two days in the fridge, cool it within two hours, freeze it early, reheat it once and make it steaming hot. Aaron has now agreed to the two-day rule. In writing. Eesha laminated it.

Now go and cook something. Then eat it by Thursday.

Pass it on
