Bamboo boards built for daily chopping. Less emotional than the onions.

Bamboo wooden chopping boards for everyday prep. Big enough for a Sunday roast, tough enough for the daily onion.

Bamboo or wooden chopping board?

Technically bamboo is a grass. In the kitchen it looks, feels and cuts like a wooden chopping board - it's just harder wearing and grows back in months rather than decades.

It's far kinder to your knives than glass or stone, too.

Plastic was a no from the start. We didn't want a board that ends up in the sea.

Still weighing up wood, plastic and glass? Here's our honest rundown: the best chopping board material (and the one to bin).

How to clean a bamboo cutting board

Warm soapy water and a sponge. No soaking and no dishwasher - it really doesn't like it.

Dry it straight away and stand it on its edge so both sides get some air.

When it starts looking thirsty, rub in a little food-safe oil.

Chopping board questions

Are bamboo cutting boards dishwasher safe?

No. The heat and the long soak make bamboo swell and split. Warm soapy water and a quick dry does the job.

Is bamboo bad for my knives?

Bamboo is a hard wood, but it's far kinder to an edge than glass, marble or slate. Keep your knives sharp and they'll be fine.

Can I cut raw meat on a wooden chopping board?

Yes. Scrub the board in hot soapy water straight after, and keep a separate board for anything you'll eat raw. That's where a chopping board set earns its keep.

What's the groove for?

It catches the juice when you carve, so it ends up in the gravy instead of on the worktop.

What sizes are they?

The set is small 20 x 15 cm, medium 28 x 21.5 cm and large 33 x 23 cm. The large chopping board is 45 x 30 cm and 2 cm thick.

Do they make a good present?

The large board is a safe bet for anyone who cooks, and it doubles as a cheese board at Christmas. Nobody has ever been disappointed by more cheese.
