Salt and Pepper Grinders
For that “black pepper, sir?” moment at home. No tip required.
Salt and pepper grinders for the table and the hob, from a glass mill set with its own stand to rechargeable electric mills that grind at the press of a button.
Both go from powder-fine to properly cracked, so the same pair does the steak and the soup.
Freshly ground pepper makes beans on toast taste fancier. That's science. Probably.

How to choose a salt and pepper grinder
Start with the grinding bit - it's the part doing the work.
Ceramic grinders don't rust, so they're happy with salt as well as pepper. Our glass mills use them.
Make sure the coarseness adjusts: fine for sauces and soups, coarse for steak and salads.
Check the neck. A wide one means filling up without a trail of peppercorns across the worktop.
See-through beats guesswork. You spot an empty one before Sunday lunch, not during it.
Manual or electric?
Manual is quiet and never needs charging. Electric is one button, which is handy if twisting is a chore or your other hand is busy stirring.
| Glass mill set | Electric USB-C mills | |
|---|---|---|
| How it grinds | Twist the top | Press a button |
| Coarseness | Powder-fine to properly cracked | 5 settings |
| Power | None needed | Rechargeable, USB-C |
| Lives on | A matching stand | A charging dock that holds both |
| Good for | Everyday use and gifts on a budget | Anyone who'd rather not twist |
What to put in them
Hard, dry things: whole peppercorns and coarse sea or rock salt.
Black, white and green pepper all come off the same vine. Pink "peppercorns" aren't pepper at all.
Keep flaky, damp and fine table salt out - it clogs the grinder.

Salt and pepper grinder questions
Is there a difference between a salt grinder and a pepper grinder?
Mostly the grinding bit. Salt is corrosive, so a steel mechanism made for pepper can rust if you fill it with salt.
Ceramic grinders handle both, which is why our glass mills use them.
Which is the best salt and pepper grinder?
One with a ceramic grinder, adjustable coarseness, a wide neck and a body you can see through. Those four matter more than the price tag.
Our glass mill set ticks all four.
Can I put table salt in a grinder?
No. It's already ground and too fine, so it clogs. Use coarse sea salt or rock salt.
How do I clean them?
The glass mills are hand wash only. Keep them away from steam.
Do they make a good present?
The glass set comes with its own stand. The electric mills come in gift-ready packaging, ready for the stocking.
